Religious importance of Tambulam

Betel leaves along with betel nuts are offered in almost every ritual in Hindu religious systems. No ritual is complete without offering of Betel leaves and betel nuts, collectively called tambulam, as it is one of the 16 upacharas or Shodasa Upacharas. Betel leaf is used as the seat of mother goddess Gowri in some rituals. Lord Hanuman is worshiped with 108 betel leaves on Saturday.
