Some people say that the way the coconut cracks when we break it makes a difference and it should crack nicely in the center or otherwise it is considered a calamity. Can we break the coconut and carry it the same way inside the temple for Abhishek?  What is the purpose of breaking a coconut?

Coconut breaking is considered a peace factor. As per the scriptures, there are some rules and let’s get to know about them briefly. One should rinse the coconut with clean water before offering it to God or breaking it in the temple. While holding the coconut, catch it near the coir area and then break it praying to God. The stone we use to break the coconut should be placed at a southeast angle. It is good to hit the coconut from a height of nine inches. It is better if the coconut breaks into two equal halves, but even if it breaks into different shapes or spoiled. It is not going to cause any harm or calamity. Chant the mantra – ‘Sivayanamah’ 108 times to get rid of any sins. When trying to break the coconut and perform Abhishek with that water, one shouldn’t proceed forward without opening the coconut into two halves. And if it is done that way, then that coconut will not be used for Nivedhan. The devotees should break the coconut, separate the water into a different vessel and then use them for Abhishek.  The coconut pieces that remained after separating the water must be used for Nivedhan.
