What is the symbolism of the appearance of Lord Shiva?

Moon is the symbol of wavering mind. Moon is also related to sexuality. Aadi Yogi Lord Shiva has overcome these two things namely instability and vigorous temper. Moon is related to expression of thought, wisdom, which has to be used with utter consciousness. That is why Lord Shiva wears a crescent moon on his head.
