Shalya Tantra, the ancient surgical science of India

Shalya means surgery in general. Shalya Tantra means the science of surgery which is elaborately mentioned in Ayurveda. Shalya tantra consists of all kinds of surgeries such as general, orthopedic, plastic, gynaecological, ear, nose and throat, opthalmology and the list goes on. Sushruta Samhita is one of the prime books which explain about surgical procedures. Rigveda and Atharva Veda also have references about medical advancements. Sushruta is said to be the son of Brahmarshi Vishwamitra. Sushruta is said to be the father of surgical sciences. Many of his methods are still followed in modern medical sciences. Shalya Tantra mentions different types of surgeries and bandages following the complex anatomy of human body.
