Many practitioners proposed several meditation methods and many religions preached different types of techniques of meditation. But the common thing in every type is observation. Yogic meditation methods are the most prevalent and their importance lies in observation based upon the concept picked. What ever the method you take, rhythmic breathing and observation turns out to be more common. There is no compulsion as anyone can pick any type of meditation technique.
