Kurma Dwadashi is a Hindu festival celebrated on the 12th day of the bright half of the Hindu lunar month of Phalguna. It is believed to be the birthday of Lord Kurma, the second avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu, and is celebrated with prayers, rituals, and devotion.

There are several reasons why Kurma Dwadashi is considered to be an important festival in the Hindu calendar:

  1. It is believed to be the birthday of Lord Kurma, one of the most important incarnations of Lord Vishnu.
  2. While churning the ocean, in which Lord Kurma played a central role, is considered a symbol of the struggle between good and evil and the importance of balance and harmony in the universe.
  3. Kurma Dwadashi is a time for devotees of Lord Vishnu to show their devotion and seek his blessings through prayer and fasting.

2. The Epic behind Kurma Avatar

The story of the Kurma avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu is an important part of Hinduism and is described in the Holy Mahabharata.

While coming to the situation, the gods and demons were once engaged in a fierce battle over the nectar of immortality, which was believed to grant eternal life and youth. To obtain the nectar, they decided to churn the ocean of milk using the mountain Mandara as a churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope.

However, the mountain began to sink into the ocean’s depths, and the gods and demons appealed to Lord Vishnu for help. In response, Lord Vishnu took the form of a giant turtle (Kurma) and supported the mountain on his back, allowing the churning to continue.

After a long and difficult struggle, the gods and demons finally obtained the nectar of immortality. Lord Vishnu, in his Kurma avatar, had played a crucial role in helping them to achieve this goal.

The incarnation of the Kurma avatar is considered a symbol of the struggle between good and evil, as well as the importance of balance and harmony in the universe. It is also seen as a reminder of the power of Lord Vishnu to protect and preserve the natural order of the world.
