In many places up north in India Deepavali is celebrated as Lakshmi puja, Bengalis celebrate it as Goddess Kaali puja. Businessmen open their new accounts. Money, Gold, things and vehicles are worshipped.
In Rajasthan, ladies, clean their gold ornaments with a material called “Khar”. They refer this festival to as “Roop chords” or “Roop Chaturdashi”.
In Gujarat, in some Brahmin families, people celebrate Deepavali soon after the first kid is born.
In North India, Deepavali is celebrated through five days.
- Ashwayuja Bahula Trayodasi.
- Naraka Chaturdashi
- Bahula Amavasya ( Deepavali)
- Balipadyami
- Yamudwiteeya
In North India, the night of the first day of Deepavali, that is, on Bahula Trayodasi’s night, a Diya is lighted at the entry of the house, to ward off the chances of sudden death. This diya is called “Nidhana” or “Yamadeepa”.
