Betel leaf as per ayurveda is said to be Thikshna or Strong, Ushna or hot in potency, Ruchikaraka or stimulates taste buds, Kashaya or Astringent in taste, Thikta or bitter after digestion, Kshara or alkaline in nature, Laghu or light and Kamavasana or aphrodisiac. Betel leaves are referred as Nagavalli or Nakavalli, tambulika, tambuladhikara, tambuladayini, and tambuladyaka and more in ancient medical texts of Hinduism.
