A Lesson from Prahlada’s Sacrifice

We will get to know about an ancient epic which tells about the significance of character and virtue. This story is narrated to Suyodhana who is jealous about the Pandavas by Dhrutarashtra.

Prahlada’s eminence

Prahlada, the devotee of Lord Vishnu, has attained the position of Indra with his power. Sachipathi, who has lost his Indra’s position felt appalling. He requested Deva-guru Bruhaspathi to give back his position. Bruhaspathi said to ask Lord Parashurama. Then he went to Parashurama.

The suggestion of Lord Parashurama

Following the order of Bruhaspathi sachimani went to meet Parashurama. He asked to give any advice to get back his position. Parashurama said “You go and ask Prahlada how he got Indra’s position. He will only tell you the way to get it back again.”

Indra’s re-entry

Indra went near Prahlada in the form of Brahman and joined as his student. Seeing his services, Prahlada felt euphoric and asked him to wish something without any fear. Then Indra asked Prahlada what he wants. Prahlada said “I got this position due to my chastity. I will offer you that one. Regain the Indra’s position and be happy.”

Prahlada’s sacrifice

Prahlada had sacrificed his chastity to Vajri (Indra). Then a bright light came outside from Prahlada’s body and asked his permission. Seeing that Prahlada said “oh Divya Purusha! Who are you?” Then the light said “I’m your chastity. According to your order, I am going near Indra.” Then another light emitted from Prahladas body then Prahlada asked “who are you? Why are you going away from my body?” then it said “I’m the truth. I will always be along with chastity. I don’t have recognition without chastity” and went away. Later his strength, bravery, righteousness all went away from his body. At last Aadi Lakshmi also started leaving his body. He stopped her and said “oh goddess! Who are you? Why are you leaving my body?” then she replied “son…! I’m Aadi Lakshmi. I can’t stay where there is no chastity”. When Prahlada asked Aadi Lakshmi about the Brahmin, then she said he is none other than Indra who had lost his position.

There is nothing impossible for Lord Vishnu’s devotees

After giving all these positions to Indra, Prahlada regained them again.

The moral of the story

Chastity is a very important character. Chastity has the power to gain even the Indra’s position also. So everyone should try to gain chastity with truth, righteousness, and character.
